detour-imageSometimes you will need to redirect a current url to a new url. Maybe you’ve found duplicative content that you want combine into one destination, or maybe you’re cleaning up 404s – either way, you’ll want to do this via a 301-redirect per proper SEO protocol.

The tool to do this is found via the WP dashboard.

Under Tools, click on Safe Redirect Manager

Click on the “Create New Rule” button at the top of the page:

Using a relative path (meaning, you don’t include your root domain, just the backslash and every path element which follows), enter in the URL that you want to redirect.

Then using either relative path or full url (either will work) enter in the new destination url. Click the blue Publish button.

Be sure to use the 301 redirect option (ignore the scary note about making a change to the pulldown). This tells webcrawlers that this change is permanent.

You can edit or remove the redirects as well via the initial page.

You can also search for a redirect via the searchbox in the upper right.
