In this tutorial, we’ll go over how to place and update the items in your site’s navigation areas. These are the primary navigation areas you’ll use:
– Primary Menu: This is the main navigation area, the one right under your 728 banner ad.
– Legal Footer: This are the small, usually legal, or corporate links at the bottom of your site.
– Mobile Menu: This is an optional (but highly-advised) truncated version of your main nag, the one that displays on mobile devices.
– Mobile More: This is a “flyout” option that allows you to expand your nag items for mobile.
From your Dashboard, hover over Appearance and select Menus.
This will bring you to the Menu… well, menu. The following menus should already be set up for you:
– Main (Primary Menu)
– Legal Footer (Footer)
You will, by default, you’ll land on the “Edit Menu” tab. Select a menu to edit from the drop down box, click the Select button. If you need to create a new menu, then click the create new menu option.
If you selected a menu to edit, you’ll get a list of items in that current menu – you can open (via the grey triangle to the right of the placement) and edit items as seen below:
You can add Pages, Links (Custom) or Categories to your navigation. Pages and Categories are added by opening, locating and clicking the checkbox next to the desired item and then clicking the Add to Menu button. Links, which are the same as Custom (above) give you the ability to link to any items at all – you just need the url and the Navigation Label, or the button title.
By default, the Page, Link and/or Category will be added to the bottom of the Menu Structure. You can drag items up or down to reposition them.
Click the blue Save Menu button to publish your changes.
Any new menus will need to be placed via the Manage Locations tab:
Place your new menu in the appropriate location via selecting it in the pulldown.
Click the blue Save Changes button to publish changes.
